Amami Brown Sugar Shochu
結来(ゆらい)
Binding the culture of the island to the future.
A new brown sugar shochu: yellow koji, atmospheric distillation, long maturation.
Thirty-five years have passed since we established our distillery in Tatsugo Town, Amami Oshima, in 1991. Yurai is the commemorative bottling that marks the milestone. In the language of Amami, yurai means to gather, to come together. We have bound the nature, the traditions and the people of Amami, everything that makes the island what it is, into a single bottle, with a prayer that it carry on into the future. Long-aged spirit brewed with yellow koji, unusual in brown sugar shochu, is blended with unfiltered spirit brewed with black koji. Enjoy an aroma and a flavor unlike any before it.

An Aroma That Opens Out, a Mellow Finish
Spirit brewed with yellow koji, unusual in brown sugar shochu and carefully laid down since 1997, is blended in part with unfiltered spirit brewed with black koji. The bright, clean aroma of the yellow koji and the mellow, expansive finish born of the powerful savory depth and body that only black koji gives are joined by the aroma of maturation that the years have raised, making a brown sugar shochu of refined, many-layered character.
Served with hot water, the savory compounds that come of leaving it unfiltered dissolve out generously, and the body and depth native to brown sugar spread slowly across the palate. On the rocks, the powerful character of the spirit itself stands out in sharp relief.
It is a bottling that shifts its expression to suit the mood and the table of the day. Do try it in a range of serves, and follow the way the aroma moves.
Binding People Together, Bringing Happiness
Yurai is a word in the language of Amami meaning to gather, to come together. Shoulder to shoulder, talking, walking on together: it is a warm word that lives in the everyday life of the island.
To that yurai we assigned the characters 結来, carrying the sense that binding people together brings happiness.
The nature of Amami, the traditions of Amami, and the people who live on this island.
May every life that shapes the island gather, yurai, around this single bottle, and carry on into the future. That is the prayer we entrusted to those two characters.
The Phantom Flower of the Amami Hills: Amami Seishika
The label is graced by the Amami seishika, which grows wild in Amami Oshima.
An evergreen small tree of the heath family found wild only on Amami Oshima, it is listed as Endangered (EN) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List and designated a rare wild plant by Kagoshima Prefecture. Simply to set eyes on one is considered good fortune, and it fully deserves its name as a phantom flower.
It lives and breathes in Amami, yet remains a treasure known only to a few. Setting its likeness on the label became the first step in Yurai's mission to carry the culture of the island outward.
